All the images on this page were taken by team members to show the hard hit areas and people in stark reality. We believe this will convince you to give your whole hearted support, in any form, for the victims of this unprecedented, unfortunate event.

The journey from Delhi : Delhi to Nagapattinam journey took nearly 48 hrs. On arrival at Nagapattinam the team went straight to the Collector office at Nagapattinam.

It was found that the arrangement by the collector was all right but the people were not there at the collector office and NGO Co-ordination centre. Finding no body up to 8 o'clock. They moved towards Pandicherry, Karaikal area and plunked at Nehru Nagar, Karaikal. The team leader Col P D Sharma contacted the Governor Lt Gen M M Lakhera who brief him on telephone itself that the most affected area in Pondicherry at Karakail was Pattinacherry.

The team reached the Regional Administrative officer and took the briefing from him; the team moved to Pattinacherry on its own arrangement, hence went on the spot.

The team remained their for 4 hrs at Pattinacherry where team met the SDM Mr. Manjoor Alam who had community based programme for the people who are living outside the Pattinacherry village.

He reviled that they are going to make an enclosure at TR Pattinam where a central community based cooking will be done for these people, it was suggested by the team leader Col P D Sharma that any plinth making there should be above the ground so that the people staying over there should not be affected by the Tsunami or Earth-quack..

At the worst affected spots: The team visited the aresa where maximum damages by Tsunami had taken place and assested damage of the area as well as the Government support given to the people of Pattinacherry it was seen on the spot.

Government has done very well and providing support to people by giving them Food, Rations, Medicines, Cloths and allowing the NGOs and other Organizations in that area to operate for relief and counseling moments.

People from various organizations like NCC and Colleges had been coming and meetings the residents of that place. It was found out that Government had already paid Rs. 2000/- per family and would be paying the diseased family Rs. 1,00,000/-.

The only point which has been bothering the people of Pattinacherry was the food supply and the electricity, Pattinacherry being at the lower attitude in comparison to other placed in Karaikal area.

The high-tide caused by the Tsunami took away the low attitude houses. 26th Dec. being a Sunday the children of the area had not gone to school but were playing at the sea shore as usual.

Hence nearly 200 people passed away in the Tsunami out of which 88 % were children on leave. The Electricity, Water and Ration were affected immediately, hence the panic caused by Tsunami.

Due to water all over for half an hour, it disturbed the normal lives of each individual of that area. We were told that the tide near the sea shore was nearly 30 feet which became water waves up to 2 kilometers in three type, for total time was 30 minutes only.

Hence the thrust of 500 KM speed did not spared any person and allowed any body for any reaction time to act upon against the killer tide of Tsunami, the people who survived came under Trauma of its unaccepted sight.

ACTION BY UDMRD FOR THE AFFECTED PEOPLE

Our team went from house to house and counseled the people that such type of thing comes once in a life time, hence it will not come so soon, however this time all the agencies are geared up, hence any thing which is happening in the sea will be noticed three hours in advance to the Tsunami affect and people will be informed accordingly for the food supply.

The UDMRD team supplied Rations for two days which was appreciated by the villagers, we also distributed Medicines to the locals.

The UDMRD people came forward to help Panchayat in their distribution system for clothings, ration, medicines and other items.

As it was found out from the Panchayat people that the Ration and food supply had not taken place by any of agency, UDMRD had planed to support the villagers with suppling dry Ration.

Therefore next day sufficient quanytity of Ration and Clothing were taken on to Patinacherry which was handed over to the gram Panchayat in presence of their members by 10 o'clock.

Many groups NGOs arrived along with UDMRD and atarted working with Trawlers and Cater Pillars.

UDMRD activated the boys of Patinacherry to activate Electricity from pillar to houses. It was found the boys who knew electrical jobs came forward to reinstate electric supply from pillar to houses.

Soon the whole village got light and it was found that everybody started working and village was looking neat and clean and there was smile as the water was restored by the PWD people.

All the members of UDMRD when satisfied, moved out of the area for the Nagapattinam collector by hiring of three wheeler Auto to move to Nagapattinam by 1 o'clock.
